Blum was already at the shop when Stone arrived, disguise amulet once again active, after moving the catalog to Desmondâs vault along with the pyramid.
The detective was sipping a cup of coffee and doing a good job of not looking nervousâat least until Stone got a look at his aura. The place was fairly busy at ten-thirty, mostly full of college students and groups of twentysomethings.
Stone got his own cup and took the seat across from him. âAll rightâwhatâs going on?â He used his normal voice so Blum would know it was him.
Blumâs shoulders slumped in relief. âNice disguise. Wish I could do thatâit would help out a lot in my job. Anyway, thanks for coming, and sorry to drag you out so late. I guess this could have waited, butâ¦â
âIâm here now, so tell me whatâs on your mind.â
The detective cocked his head. âYou sound a little off, but I canât put my finger on why.â
âLong night.â
âYeah, okay. None of my business. Thatâs fine.â He sipped his coffee, leaned back, and met Stoneâs gaze. âI got a visit tonight.â
âA visit? From whom?â
âThatâs just it. I donât know exactly. They didnât introduce themselves.â He leaned closer. âAnd I gotta tell you before we go onâthey told me not to tell you we talked.â
Stone tensed. âIs that right?â He shifted to magical sight and glanced around the room, pausing at each of the groups. Nobodyâs aura looked agitated, and no one appeared to be paying any attention to them. Almost without thinking, he cast the âcone of silenceâ spell around their table.
âYeah. They were waitinâ for me when I got back to my place. Wanted to go for a drive.â
âAnd you let that happen?â
Blum let out a slow breath. âIâm pretty sure they were some kind of law enforcement. They didnât give me names, but I know the type.â
âSo you went with them.â
âYeah. Didnât have a lot of choice.â He looked up. âThey asked me about you.â
âAbout me?â This wasnât good. Stone thought back to Glenn Turman, whoâd come to his house, and Matthew Fischer, whoâd wanted to know what he was up to regarding the âspace alienâ he and Harrison had busted out of the government facility. Were they connected to these people tonight? âWhat did they want to know?â
âIâm not sure how they figured it out, but they knew you were interested in the stuff from Hiram Drummondâs collection.â
âIt wasnât exactly a secret. It would be odd if I werenât interested in it, given my line of work.â
âYeah, but I got the impression they were aware you were more interested than you should be.â
âIâ¦see.â Stone sipped his coffee and tried to think. âWhat did you tell them?â
âI said I didnât know anything about that. Not my jurisdiction.â
âDid they believe you?â
âI donât think so, but they didnât push it.â
âWhat did they look like?â
Blum shrugged. âPretty generic. A guy and a woman, both in their thirties, clean-cut, nicely dressed. If I had to guess, Iâd say they might be feds.â
This was getting better and better.
